Friday ‘Law & Order Café’
Don’t miss this week’s ‘Law & Order‘ Café
Dear Friday Café patrons,
Recently Mrs. Myrmidon and I had a run-in with the Law. Why am I telling you this? Because this week’s topic is, “Have you ever been stopped by the police?”. Please tell us a story or two about your experiences.
We were crossing a downtown street when we were hailed by a fellow. At first glance his toque and parka made me think he was a panhandler. Turns out he was a policeman and he was stopping us because we had jay-walked. He took our ID, radioed our details to police headquarters, asking if we had a previous record of jay-walking. The answer was no, so the policeman let us go with a warning: next time we would be fined $250…each.
Afterward, I fumed. When we had crossed the street, no cars were in sight, so we posed no danger to ourselves or anyone else. “Why us?”, I asked myself. “Except for this trivial infraction, we’re law-abiding people. Didn’t he have real law-breakers to pursue?”.
Furthermore the $250 penalty is far too harsh for crossing a street—especially when motorists are fined only $287 for texting while driving (that’s what I call a truly dangerous act, and I see people getting away with it all the time). On the other hand, the thought of a fine has deterred yours truly from jay-walking.
So, that’s my True Confession. After I pour you a virtual drink, please tell us your story.
