Friday ‘Classics Newbie’ Café
Don’t miss this week’s ‘Classics Newbie‘ Café
Dear friends, welcome to the Friday Café
There was a first time for everyone to encounter the Classics, by which I mean mostly the Greeks: Homer, Hesiod, Plato, Aeschylus, Sophocles, etc. Do you remember yours? Was it in school, and how did you react? Or did you come—or return–to them later in life? Had your appreciation/understanding of them changed?
I myself came to them later in life, and I’m glad I did. Except for some intro to philosophy classes in college, I wasn’t indoctrinated into the prevailing academic interpretations, and so I managed to discover new meanings and connections on my own. I had by then developed habits of thinking inductively, metaphorically, and so I saw the similarities with other teachings from other cultures.
So tell us about your experiences, and I’ll try to serve up your favorite refreshment. (Just caffeine-based for now—the bar will open at 6PM your time.)
