Friday ‘On Reading’ Café
Don’t miss this week’s ‘On Reading’ Café
Dear Café Patrons
The last café dealt with the subject of the storage of books, so it seems natural to go on talking about books. Summer is in full swing and the weather is fine. When I go on vacation in the countryside or by the sea, I always bring several books with me. If I fly, I always bring a mystery novel to the airport, to avoid thinking about real disaster which might happen. When I recently spent a few days by the sea, I brought two books with me. The first one is Proust’s Days of Reading which I highly recommend. It is a small book, enchanting and extremely well written. I was thinking that I’d have to drag the book around during the whole holiday but actually I read it in one go. Proust writes about his passion for books. He loved reading, and considered it was more than just friendship, it was a friendship without ugliness. He wrote the first version of Days of Reading as a preface to a translation of a book written by the English author, John Ruskin.
So what books did you take with you on your last vacation, or what books are you reading this summer? Do you change your reading patterns while on vacation or while traveling? Grab a comfortable chair and a drink of whatever pleases you and tell us about your summertime reading.
