Friday ‘Telos’ Café
Don’t miss this week’s ‘Telos‘ Café!
In Odyssey 9, there is a marvelous description of a feast. You close your eyes and you hear the singer, and imagine the banquet tables filled with grain, meat and wine. Nothing is more pleasant to bring a telos for a community than to have a plentiful and delicious meal.
for I declare, there is no outcome [telos] that has more pleasurable beauty [kharis] 6 than the moment when the spirit of festivity [euphrosunē] prevails throughout the whole community [dēmos] 7 and the people at the feast [daitumones], throughout the halls, are listening to the singer [aoidos] 8 as they sit there—you can see one after the other—and they are sitting at tables that are filled 9 with grain and meat, while wine from the mixing bowl is drawn by the one who pours the wine and takes it around, pouring it into their cups. 11 This kind of thing, as I see it in my way of thinking, is the most beautiful thing in the whole world.

So the Friday Café is taking a break over the holiday season, although discussion continues in the forum. This is also the last Friday Café blog post. We’ll start the new year with another type of social gathering in the forums. You will know more in 2018…..surprise….
I am sure that you have some memories from the different topics at the Café. I remember the Friday ‘Asclepius’ Café: it reminded us that, unhappily, we are mortals, I also liked the musical Friday ‘Revival’ Café, filled with splendid sounds, and the Friday ‘Amour’ Café, to name just a few….
What about you—which one do you remember vividly?
And also, lets not forget the holidays—what are you planning to do for the holiday season? Are you going to travel and enjoy visiting friends or family, or are you going to be the host, and cook and decorate your house for the occasion, or are you going to rest and take a well deserved break, or fly away to an exotic island?
Please join me for our “end of the Café party”. Come inside—the weather is cold and snow is on the ground. A log fire is blazing in the hearth. Order a nice festive beverage and some snacks, take a comfortable armchair, and let’s chat about your best memories from the Café or about the happy holidays.
